Basilica of Santa Maria Novella
Architect Leon Battista Alberti
Movement Italian Renaissance
Located at Florence, Italy
Santa Maria Novella is the only Florentine church façade to have been completed during the Renaissance. Alberti utilizes the square here—with two flanking the Classical portal on the lower level, while another above the frieze forms a “temple”. Scrolls help to connect the two levels and hide the clerestory behind the façade. The strict adherence to intricate proportions, together with the use of multicolored patterns, creates a dazzling effect.
