Or San Michele served as a granary and shrine to an image of the Virgin Mary, with several guilds commissioning niches to adorn the outer walls. This was commissioned by the Guild of Wood and Stone Carvers and depicts the Four Saints who refused to create a pagan statue for the Roman emperor Diocletian. Nanni treats the subjects as if they had been created in their own era; they huddle together as if contemplating their fate. Below, a register depicts a sculptor, stonecutters and a mason at work.
