St. Mark (Donatello)
Date ca. 1411-13
Movement Italian Renaissance
Housed at Museo di Or San Michele, Florence
This particular work at Or San Michele was commissioned by the Linen Weavers’ Guild. Here, Donatello relies heavily upon his learnings from the classics—note St. Mark’s contrapposto, his dramatic yet thoughtful gaze, and his robes that fall in response to his body’s movement, not as if it were a shell. The body is balanced—from the left, it is static and vertical; from the right, it is diagonal and portrays movement.
