Adoration of the Magi (Fabriano)

Adoration of the Magi (Fabriano)

Artist Gentile da Fabriano

Date 1423

Movement Italian Renaissance

Medium Tempera on panel

Housed at Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

This work was commissioned by the Strozzi family of Florence for the Gothic church of Santa Trinità. The central panel portrays the magi and accompanying crowds along their journey, appearing in the background and again before the Holy Family. Though the scene appears crowded, it is not overwhelming—da Fabriano employs a calming, golden light that is reflected in the robes of the figures and again in the panel’s frame.

In the left panel of the predella, da Fabriano employs the same soft light, this time emanating from the Christ Child—the light itself takes upon meaning and unifies the figures and scene into one, compounded by the softness of the lines.
