Madonna and Child (Luca della Robbia)
Artist Luca della Robbia
Date ca. 1465
Movement Italian Renaissance
Medium Glazed terra cotta
Located at Or San Michele, Florence
Works continued to be installed at Or San Michele; terra cotta roundels, such as the ones seen here, were ideal substitutes for the guilds with less resources. Here, the Virgin and Child, each echoing each other, view passerby; they are contained within a Brunelleschian arch flanked by lilies; a vivid, enamel-like background of blue helps to emphasize the main subject matter.
