Piero learned about painting with oil after working alongside Flemish painters at the court of Federico da Montefeltro in Urbino. Painted shortly after Battista’s death; her pale face is almost devoid of substantive features, though is framed by a complex hairstyle and jewelry. Piero paints the two against a low, sprawling landscape, making them appear massive and authoritative.
