Piero incorporates devices from his contemporaries—note the triangular composition, pale color palate and languid facial features, as seen in Masaccio’s Trinity; or the soft shadowing of natural light, as seen in Veneziano’s Madonna and Child with Saints. Christ’s statuesque anatomy highlights his triumph over death, particularly in front of the slouched, slumbering Roman soldiers; the dead trees to the left and the vivacious ones to the right help impose the Resurrection theme. The viewer sees the seen as if from below, a testament to Piero’s mastery of perspective.
