The Last Supper (Castagno)
Artist Andrea del Castagno
Date ca. 1445-50
Movement Italian Renaissance
Provenance Sant’Apollonia, Florence
This work was created for the dining hall of the Benedictine women’s convent of Sant’Apollonia. The figures are placed in a stage-like setting, with Judas alone on the near-side of the table. Architectural devices of varied colors create sharp contrasts in a formal, symmetric format—the dramatic, heavily-veined marble panel behind St. Peter, Jesus and Judas draw special attention. Sculpturally-inspired figures and the formal setting help to impose a brooding silence.
