One of the figures that still remained in the abbreviated version of Pope Julius II’s tomb is Moses. The Old Testament figure holds the Ten Commandments close to his chest and looks o into the distance with a vigilant air. Michelangelo has given Moses a pair of horns, due to a mistranslation in the Vulgate for the word “ray,” for the divine light he emanated after having encountered God. A reflection of this same error can also be found in the Well of Moses.
