This sculptural program was commissioned by Pope Julius II as his grand tomb, which would have been placed in the new St. Peter’s Basilica. After the pope’s death, the structure’s plan was significantly abbreviated and was not completed until 1545; it was then placed in San Pietro in Vincoli, instead of St. Peter’s Basilica.
