Raphael recalls the subject matter of The Virgin of the Rocks; however, he replaces Leonardo’s intricate formation of figures with a simple triangle, likely influenced by Michelangelo’s style; Raphael further breaks from his Da Vinci by reducing the amount of smokiness in the scene while bolstering the use chiaroscuro to an impressive affect – the figures and features of the landscape do not appear to reflect light, but rather appear to emanate light themselves.
