Stanza della Segnatura (Raphael)
Movement High Renaissance
Located at Vatican Palace, Rome
Though this room would later be used as the place for which papal bulls were signed, it was originally intended as the papal library under Julius II. Raphael was commissioned to paint a cycle of works highlighting the apex of human knowledge (and essentially, the Renaissance itself), which include the arts, philosophy, law, and theology. For the arts, Raphael has placed a handful of masters upon Parnassus, the sacred mountain of Apollo; Apollo himself appears, surrounded by the Nine Muses, along with writers such as Dante, Homer, Petrarch and Sappho.
