Raphael utilized his ever-growing workshop and the use of engravings (which could be copied easily) to meet the fierce demand for his works. Here, Raphael depicts the judgement of Paris from the gods of Olympia in the sky above and river gods to the lower right. Raphael would have based this image off an ancient Roman sarcophagus panel, and he maintains the likeness by placing the figures on a single; Raphael wished to surpass the works of ancient Rome, however, and attempts to do so here by implementing exquisite chiaroscuro.
