Wide buttresses, though structurally unnecessary, help to impose the power of King Urnammu and the return of the Sumerian’s rule over the Mesopotamian Plains in this temple dedicated to the moon god, Nanna. No longer utilizing a roundabout staircase for entrance, the Sumerians here employ a straight- lined processional staircase.
