Lady of Auxerre (Kore of Auxerre)
Date ca. 630 BCE
Provenance Gortyn, Crete
Housed at Musée du Louvre, Paris
Egyptian influence in this sculpture is clear—this kore stands with a static, frontal pose and wears stylized hair. Unlike the Egyptians, however, she is truly free-standing, not needing support at her back from her original stone; further, while some aspects of Egyptian sculpture were stylized, the Greeks go even further here, as evinced by this statue’s wide-eyed expression and heavily arched eyebrows.
