Artist Euthymides

Date ca. 510-500 BCE

Movement Greek

Medium Red-figured amphora

Height 2’

Housed at Museum Antiker, Kleinkunst, Munich

By introducing the red-figure method, by which painters would fill in the background and leave the red of the vase to become their figures, artists during this time were able to add more life and animation to their works. Euthymides is able to portray motion even with his figure’s back to the viewer, all by indicating one shoulder’s raised height to the other by adding simple lines to the figure’s back.
