Provenance Balustrade of Temple of Athena Nike, Akropolis, Athens
Housed at Akropolis Museum, Athens
This work was created in the Pheidian, or Parthenon style, especially considering the “wet” look of the beautifully carved garment. Athena Nike removes a shoe before stepping onto holy ground, with wings balancing the rest of her body, giving this normally awkward pose a godly gracefulness.
