The Erechtheion housed shrines to Athena Polias, Poseidon, and King Erechtheus, along with an ancient, sacred olive wood. Depicted below is the Porch of the Maidens, including six caryatids which, according to Vitruvius, were installed to forever remind the city of the burden placed upon the women of Caryae, who were taken as slaves after their people had formed an alliance with the Persians.
