The Propylaea

The Propylaea

Architect Mnesikles

Date 437-432 BCE

Movement Greek | Classical

Medium Marble

Located at Akropolis, Athens

As in the Parthenon, Doric elements infuse here with Ionic. Doric columns uphold the main facade, while a central pathway leads through the center; Ionic columns then line the narrow pathway leading to the top of the Akropolis. Its northern wing would have contained the first known public space for viewing paintings (pinakotheke) while the southern may have contained a library.
