Plan of Pergamon, Turkey

Plan of Pergamon, Turkey

Date 2nd century BCE

Movement Greek | Hellenistic

Under King Eumenes, planners utilized the natural surroundings to emphasize the city’s theatricality. At the lowest point (not depicted) visitors would have started at the Lower Agora, working their way up along the sloping terrain and past three gymnasia and the Sanctuaries of Demeter and Hera. Rising further, visitors would have encountered magnificent views below as they entered the Upper Agora, passed the Temple of Dionysus and the Great Altar Zeus, then on to the Sanctuary of Athena, the library, and theatre.
