Figures on the frieze are carved in such high relief that they appear to be in the round. Recalling Classical motifs, the stoicism of Athena contrasts vividly but beautifully to the writhing agony of Alkyoneus. The sunken eyes of Alkyoneus is perhaps the artist’s way of paying homage to Skopas.
