Portraiture grew in popularity at around the same time as it did in Grecian culture, and was aided by the ease of workmanship that terra cotta provided—this lent to highly personalized sculptures. Here, the artist incorporates the subject’s traits: blonde hair, a crooked nose, wrinkle lines and protruding ears.
