The abstract qualities of figures continues into the area of non-elite art as well—here, the butcher and woman’s bodies are squat and stocky, and their figures and qualities have been unnaturalistically emphasized (the butcher’s head being too large for his body, for example). The primary function of this style is believed to be enhanced legibility of the subject matter.
