Panels of the Fourth Style wall paintings also include still lives of the mundane, placed in what would have appeared as actual shelves or niches. Certainly these were not to be taken as narratives, as depictions in the earlier styles were. Here, the artist employs blotches of white to indicate highlights, and shadows (of alternating direction) to indicate the spacing amongst the objects.
