The first half of the 12th century saw the creation of a number of manuscript illustrations from Cistercian monasteries, even despite the Order’s stance against creating them. Here, a monk and layman chop down a tree that cleverly forms an “I”. The action itself, coupled with the monk’s work clothes, indicates the Order’s emphasis on hard work and manual labor.
