Tomb of Bernabo Visconti

Tomb of Bernabo Visconti

Date before 1363

Movement Proto-Renaissance

Medium Marble

Height 19’8″

Housed at Castello Sforzesco, Milan

The Visconti family came to dominate Lombardy, making powerful connections to the French monarchy along the way. This tomb would have sat upon the altar of a Milanese church—an obstinate show of authority. Bernabò stands in his stirrups, adding additional height to the already massive sculpture; his pose is rigid; however, his horse is natural and elegant, conveying French Gothic influence.
